White residue on supposedly clean dishes is one of the most common complaints we hear from Arizona homeowners. Understanding the cause helps you find effective solutions.
The white spots are mineral deposits, primarily calcium and magnesium, left behind as water evaporates. Arizona has some of the hardest water in the country, making this problem particularly severe.
Rinse aid is essential in hard water areas. This product helps water sheet off dishes rather than forming droplets that leave mineral deposits as they dry.
Not all detergents work equally well in hard water. Products specifically formulated for hard water contain extra water softening agents. Pods and tablets often work better than liquid or powder in our area.
Water temperature affects mineral deposition. Ensure your water heater is set to at least 120 degrees Fahrenheit and run the hot water at the kitchen sink before starting the dishwasher.
Whole-house water softeners significantly reduce mineral content. If you don't have one and hard water problems are severe, consider installation as a permanent solution.
For existing buildup inside the dishwasher, run an empty cycle with citric acid or a commercial dishwasher cleaner. This removes mineral deposits from spray arms and internal components.
Check your dishwasher's rinse aid dispenser to ensure it's functioning properly and set to an appropriate level for your water hardness.
Some premium dishwashers like Miele include built-in water softening systems. If you're replacing a dishwasher, consider these features for hard water areas.
Glass etching, which appears similar to white residue but is actually permanent damage, results from too much detergent or excessive water temperature. Distinguish between removable deposits and permanent damage.
