A refrigerator that suddenly starts making unusual noises can be concerning. While some sounds are normal, others indicate problems that need attention before they become major repairs.

Humming or buzzing sounds are typically normal and indicate the compressor is running. However, if this sound becomes significantly louder than usual, it could indicate the compressor is working harder than it should, possibly due to dirty condenser coils or low refrigerant.

Clicking noises often come from the start relay attempting to start the compressor. If you hear repeated clicking without the compressor starting, this component may need replacement.

Rattling sounds usually indicate loose parts. Check that the refrigerator is level and that nothing is vibrating against the unit. In Arizona homes with tile floors, a slightly unlevel refrigerator can create noticeable rattling.

A grinding noise could indicate problems with the evaporator or condenser fan motors. These fans can become obstructed by ice buildup or debris, or the motor bearings may be failing.

Squealing or chirping sounds often come from the evaporator fan motor and typically indicate the motor is starting to fail. This should be addressed promptly to avoid a complete breakdown.

Water dripping sounds are normal during the defrost cycle. However, if you hear constant dripping or find water pooling beneath the unit, the defrost drain may be clogged.

For luxury brands like Sub-Zero and Thermador, unusual noises should be evaluated by a trained technician. These units have specific sound signatures, and what seems abnormal to you may be perfectly normal, or vice versa.
